CHRISTIAN MISSIONARY CONTRIBUTION

Christian Missionary Contribution to India

Christian missionaries played an important and pioneering role in the democratization of education in the cultural, social and economic fabric of India. Missionaries raised the standard of education by teaching students and training teachers with improved methods of teaching as well as developing several vernacular languages. It is significant that the first book to be published in India was the Tamil Bible. Missionaries translated the Bible into several languages, wrote grammar and produced dictionaries for several languages. Christian medical missionaries pioneered health care by starting mission hospitals in India which contributed much to the medical scene in India. Modern medicine became available to all people. Christian mission hospitals are among the best in India. Christian missionaries also started agricultural and technical institutes, rehabilitation centres and homes for the aged. The colossal achievement of Christian missionaries in their selfless and committed contribution to India is etched into the domestic fabric of the nation.
